CHAPTER 19

Finally, I head to my place. I shower and get changed. Although I think about taking a nap, I don’t. Instead, I head out for a long walk, hoping it will help to clear my mind.

A cool breeze brushes against my face, offering a momentary respite from the chaos and confusion swirling within me. Lost in my thoughts, I find myself immersed in the soothing rhythm of my footsteps, seeking solace in the simplicity of the world around me.

However, as I continue my solitary stroll, my serenity is abruptly shattered when a familiar figure emerges from around the bend. It's Damien, his presence casting a shadow over my newfound peace. My heart quickens, and I feel a mix of apprehension and defiance welling up inside me. I'm not altogether certain that I want anything to do with him. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think some of the reasons why Jackson is turning against me is because of Damien.

Because Damien wants me for himself? For some other nefarious reason? I have no idea.

I try to maintain my composure as Damien approaches, his eyes searching mine. For what? For any flicker of vulnerability?

I steel myself, determined not to let him disrupt my newfound sense of independence and strength.

Damien stops when he stands before me, his piercing gaze fixed upon me with an intensity that sends a shiver down my spine. I take a step back, my guard instinctively rising.

"Robyn, fancy running into you here. Taking a stroll to clear your head?"

I tighten my grip on the straps of my bag, my voice steady as I respond, trying to hide the unease simmering beneath the surface. "Damien. What are you doing here? I… I’m not sure that I have anything to say to you."

Damien smirks, his eyes glinting with a mix of amusement and intrigue. He takes a step closer, invading my personal space. I instinctively take another step back, keeping a safe distance between us. "Come on, Robyn. Don't be like that. We had something, didn't we? Something... intriguing."

I shake my head. “I’m not sure it’s a good idea for us to be involved in any fashion,” I say carefully.

“Why’s that?” He sounds more amused. “We’ve talked a little bit. We flirted some. You’re acting like we have a history, a past.” Damien waves a hand. The movement is graceful, and I notice how long his fingers are. “You’re acting like you’ve moved on, but how can that be when you haven’t truly had me yet?”

“Yet? You’re too bold for your own good, Damien. Maybe I’ve chosen someone else.”

“Another Grim Reaper?”

“What if I’ve chosen myself?” I ask, trying but failing to keep my tone light.

His expression darkens, a glimmer of frustration breaking through his confident facade. "You think you can just walk away from this world? From everything that's happening? You're in deeper than you realize."

I raise an eyebrow, my resolve unwavering. "I may be entangled in something I don't fully understand, but that doesn't mean I need or want your involvement.
